The CCT Winter Adventure

You already know Central Otago is a winter hotspot, but have you ever experienced it on your bike rather than on the slopes? This tour isn’t for the faint-hearted, with crisp mornings and changeable weather conditions, but it’s worth it for a ride through a winter wonderland like no other.

Ride against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains, big blue skies and unforgettable scenery.  You’ll be on the trails between 10am and 3pm to make the most of the warmest part of the day.

But that doesn’t mean less time to enjoy the famous southern hospitality. Slip into your cosy and toasty accommodation after each day’s ride and relax by a warm fire with a drink in hand.

Make sure you pack warm clothes, including layers of merino or thermals, a warm and waterproof jacket, leggings, gloves and waterproof shoe covers to keep your feet dry and warm. Also carry plenty of snacks and water as some of the cafes and hotels may be closed during the day.

The Winter Experience package is tailored to what you want to see and do so get in touch and we’ll sort out your perfect itinerary.

WHAT OUR CUSTOMER SAY

From pick up at the airport, to getting bikes sorted, to have accommodation all sorted and also lovely restaurants booked ... It all was very well done! Friendly and helpful staff, doing their very best to sort out any issues immediately. Bikes were very comfortable and enjoyable!

Patricia S, July 2019

Three days in late April on the Central Otago Rail Trail was an amazing experience. Breath-taking scenery complimented by the autumn colours. Weather was cool but dry and perfect for the riding conditions. Character field towns and bars to stop on the way serving quality food and friendly service. All made really easy booking through Cycle Surgery who arranged everything - booked our accommodations, evening meals, luggage transport and provided bikes which were of a high quality. Nothing was ever too much for Dave, Pip and the team. Looking forward to my next rail trail ride with Cycle Surgery.

Avi M, May 2019

We were a group of 4 families with kids ranging from 8 to 15, doing the cycle trail for the first time. We used cycle surgery to book for 20 of us. Cycle surgery was very efficient and quick to respond to any queries we had. We didn't have to think about a thing - all meals, accomodation and pick ups were organised for us. With a comprehensive itinerary for us to follow including how long to allow between stops. Bikes were excellent and the gel seat pads included were loved by all. We took the option of three e-bikes for some of the mums. They were a treat but we probably will do without them next time. The accomodation and food stops organised by Central Cycle Trail Co. were all excellent.

Annabel S, April 2019

Central Cycle Trail Co. arranged our 5 day ride on the OCRT and everything went totally as planned. The bikes were well maintained and very solid. My spouse had an e-bike and it was faultless. I might try one on the next long ride! All of the accommodation and transfers were seamless. All of the accommodation was first rate with all of the hosts will to go the extra mile for us. The Taleri Gorge rail trip that transferred us on to Dunedin was a fitting way of finishing such a great vacation. Thanks Pip for making the trip so memorable.

FAQ’s

What do I need to wear?

Central Otago weather can be very changeable. We recommend being prepared for all seasons and always carrying a waterproof jacket and leggings, gloves, sunscreen, a hat and warm clothes to put on if you get wet.  These items will all easily fit into your panniers.

What should my fitness level be?

Much of the Rail Trail is relatively flat, as the railway line which once ran through its course between Middlemarch and Clyde could not be built on steep gradients. This makes it the perfect off-road experience for the whole family, regardless of fitness level. Only more experienced riders should tackle the Adrenaline Junkie trails.

WHAT’S THE WEATHER LIKE?

As New Zealand’s weather is notoriously changeable, pack for all conditions, regardless of the season. You may encounter glorious sunshine, driving rain, gusting winds and snow – all in the same day!

What should I bring with me on the trail?

Our luggage shuttles will carry your main bags between locations each day. But here are a few essentials to have on you for the ride. Snacks and water - there are great cafes and shops along the way so you also can purchase as you go. There are eco-toilets along the trail, however, please carry your own toilet paper. Sunscreen. Mobile phone and charger. Small first aid kit. Torch for exploring the tunnels along the trail.
