Not for the faint-hearted

Trails for Adrenaline Junkies

If you’re looking to head up into the rugged slopes and go a bit more off-road, Central Otago’s mountain biking trails are ready and waiting. The beauty of these trails is that they aren’t all confined to one spot. You can journey around the different locations and get something a little bit different at each one. Tackle the thrilling routes on your own if you’re an experienced rider, or we can arrange for a guide to ride with you.

Butchers Dam & Sphinx Rock

You’ll begin your ride at Butchers Dam and climb up the Purple Haze Track to Sphinx Rock.  This is a solid climb with quite a few switchbacks as you make your ascent, and the fun then begins. The ride down to the Roxburgh Gorge is a stunning one, but keep your eyes on the track as you don’t want to make a mistake on these quick lines.

The Linger & Die

Not far from Clyde is the Hawksburn Road up to the Clyde Lookout. Popular with keen downhillers, these tracks are not for the faint hearted! A technical but excellent single track, there are a number of different routes to explore. The climb to the top on the road is a good workout however, to maximise the adrenaline, Central Cycle Trails can shuttle you back up for multiple runs.

Fraser Dam Ride

Get those legs pumping for the trip up the Fraser Dam Road to the Fraser Dam. This is definitely a workout but the views are worth it before letting gravity take care of the return trip. Take in the amazing views of Alexandra as you make your way down.
