TOUR PACKAGE

Adrenaline Junkies

A mountain biker's paradise

Want to take on trails with a bit more edge to them? We also cater to the downhill thrill seekers with packages that will shuttle you to some well-known (and a few less well-known) spots where you can really let loose.

Central Otago's cycle trails and the Rail Trail might be the big drawcard for keen cyclists, but this area is also a mountain biker’s paradise.

Technical, quick and set in some of the most spectacular locales, these tracks have it all. And with names like Gut Buster, Linger and Die and Butchers Dam, expect to be challenged to earn your stripes around here.

Tackle the hair-raising routes on your own if you’re an experienced rider, or we can arrange for a guide to ride with you and show you how the locals do it.

Highlights

  • Take on the popular Linger & Die downhill trail and its different routes to explore.

  • Keep your eyes on the track for the rapid descent from Sphinx Rock.

  • Tackle the rugged countryside as you ride from the Clyde Lookout to Bannockburn.

  • Get those legs pumping for the trip up to the Fraser Dam, before letting gravity take care of the return trip.

  • Grab a well-deserved beverage of choice and a meal at a quaint country pub in one of the trailside towns.

WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS SAY

From pick up at the airport, to getting bikes sorted, to have accommodation all sorted and also lovely restaurants booked ... It all was very well done! Friendly and helpful staff, doing their very best to sort out any issues immediately. Bikes were very comfortable and enjoyable!

Patricia S, July 2019

From Pip & Lauren organising our accommodation and logistics, to Audry & Dave carrying out our transfers and face-to-face, we (group of seven friends) had a fantastic time in May, cycling from Middlemarch to Clyde. The bikes, the accommodation, the restaurants, the attention to detail - everything was perfect. Even the weather played its part. Thank you so much. Would not hesitate to recommend Cycle Surgery to anyone thinking about doing this trip.

Heather M, May 2019

We were a group of 4 families with kids ranging from 8 to 15, doing the cycle trail for the first time. We used cycle surgery to book for 20 of us. Cycle surgery was very efficient and quick to respond to any queries we had. We didn't have to think about a thing - all meals, accomodation and pick ups were organised for us. With a comprehensive itinerary for us to follow including how long to allow between stops. Bikes were excellent and the gel seat pads included were loved by all. We took the option of three e-bikes for some of the mums. They were a treat but we probably will do without them next time. The accomodation and food stops organised by Central Cycle Trail Co. were all excellent.

Annabel S, April 2019

We (5 mates), have just finished the Otago Central Rail Trail with Central Cycle Trail Co. From before the trip, the communication were clear and they were very flexible as they allowed us to add 1 additional person in the last minute. The bikes were very comfortable and durable and the accommodation for both nights were fantastic. The Old Post Office at Omakau was an absolute gem and the outdoor jacuzzi after a day of riding was a welcomed surprise. The ride itself was spectacular. Overall the cost for the bike/equipment/accommodation/dinner was very reasonable and a great value. The team which met us on the first day, and on the last day were accommodating and easy to deal with.

FAQ’s

What do I need to wear?

Central Otago weather can be very changeable. We recommend being prepared for all seasons and always carrying a waterproof jacket and leggings, gloves, sunscreen, a hat and warm clothes to put on if you get wet.  These items will all easily fit into your panniers.

What should my fitness level be?

Much of the Rail Trail is relatively flat, as the railway line which once ran through its course between Middlemarch and Clyde could not be built on steep gradients. This makes it the perfect off-road experience for the whole family, regardless of fitness level. Only more experienced riders should tackle the Adrenaline Junkie trails.

WHAT’S THE WEATHER LIKE?

As New Zealand’s weather is notoriously changeable, pack for all conditions, regardless of the season. You may encounter glorious sunshine, driving rain, gusting winds and snow – all in the same day!

What should I bring with me on the trail?

Our luggage shuttles will carry your main bags between locations each day. But here are a few essentials to have on you for the ride. Snacks and water - there are great cafes and shops along the way so you also can purchase as you go. There are eco-toilets along the trail, however, please carry your own toilet paper. Sunscreen. Mobile phone and charger. Small first aid kit. Torch for exploring the tunnels along the trail.
